At the beginning of the 1900's there was what erupted into a war between French and German Dollmakers.
The French were producing very high quality dolls and the Germans decided to export their own dolls to France and French Colonies.

This they did very succesfully by price-cutting.
The French continued by amalgamating most of the high quality dollmaking companies into the SBJF
This association was cleverly orgainised with members supplying each other with Bisque Heads, clothes ,bodies and acessories.
Although this worked for a few years, the lower labour costs of the German Home workers who assembled the dolls were  a bit too difficult for the French Companies to match up to.

The German Companies exported to America and the Far East and Austraila.
The French kept in business by producing better quality dolls and dresses until Kestner came into the fray and he started producing dolls which were almost the same quality as those made by Jumeau.
